XiDian University
was my host in summer of 1999. I spent the summer in
Xi'an, the anciant capital of the dynastic emperors
of China (now the People's Republic of China).
I spent my mornings learning as much as I could about
listening and speaking the
Chinese language,
and reading and writing
characters (HanZi) and pinyin
at
XiDian
(in English).
I spent the afternoons on campus, getting to know students and
the schooling system, and I spent evenings in the
city of
Xi'an,
Shaanxi
province.
Several things about the trip struck me, such as
the knowledge of how it feels to
be the minority.
If you travel to the area, you'll no doubt feel the warm
hospitality of the average mainlander, and come to
appreciate the art and food. But I urge you, if you
have the time, to go beyond these things and make a few
local friends — you'll find out more about yourself
and enjoy your stay much more than a simple tourist
could.
